How this started
It started with a bucket, a fire escape, and one bad decision.
This site began with one dead tomato plant. It was 2018, and I’d wedged a five-gallon bucket onto a Brooklyn fire escape, dropped in a ‘Sun Gold’ seedling from the corner hardware store, and watched it turn crisp and brown within three weeks. Overwatered, it turned out — the bucket had no drainage holes.

We’re a hands-on team of home gardeners who believe the best gardening advice comes from real experience, careful testing, and learning from failure. Over the past decade, we’ve grown through changing spaces, challenging conditions, countless seed packets, and notebooks filled with lessons. We test so-called “foolproof” methods across different setups before recommending them—sharing only practical, honest advice that has earned its place in the garden.
How we decide to recommend
We grow it ourselves first
Nothing goes on the site until it's been tried in an actual container or bed here, not just read about somewhere else.
We write down what fails
A method that works once isn't a method. If something flops in a different pot size or a wetter summer, that goes in the post too.
We test across a few setups
The same tip gets tried in a raised bed, a container, and in-ground where possible — "plant it 12 inches apart" means different things in different soil..
We go back and fix it
Posts get updated when a season proves last year's advice wrong. Older advice doesn't just sit there uncorrected.
